The Yucks: Two Years in Tampa With the Losingest Team in NFL History

Friday Night Lights meets The Bad News Bears in "a brisk, warmhearted reminder of how professional sports can occasionally reach stunning unprofessional depths" (Publishers Weekly): the first two seasons with the worst team in NFL history, the hapless, hilarious, and hopelessly winless 1976--1977 Ta

mpa Bay Buccaneers. Long before their first Super Bowl victory in 2003, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did something no NFL team had ever done before and that none will ever likely do again: They lost twenty-six games in a row. This was no ordinary streak. Along with their ridiculous mascot and uniforms,

which were known as "the Creamsicles," the Yucks were a national punch line and personnel purgatory. Owned by the miserly and bulbous-nosed Hugh Culverhouse, the team was the end of the line for Heisman Trophy winner and University of Florida hero Steve Spurrier, and a banishment for former Cowboy d

efensive end Pat Toomay after he wrote a tell-all book about his time on "America's Team." Many players on the Bucs had been out of football for years, and it wasn't uncommon for them to have to introduce themselves in the huddle. They were coached by the ever-quotable college great John McKay. "We

can't win at home and we can't win on the road," he said. "What we need is a neutral site." But the Bucs were a part of something bigger, too. They were a gambit by promoters, journalists, and civic boosters to create a shared identity for a region that didn't exist--Tampa Bay. Before the Yucks, "th

e Bay" was a body of water, and even the worst team in memory transformed Florida's Gulf communities into a single region with a common cause. The Yucks is "a funny, endearing look at how the Bucs lost their way to success, cementing a region through creamsicle unis and John McKay one-liners" (Sport

s Illustrated).

A princess of Mars

The story is introduced by a supposed narrator certify the authenticity. Presented as the nephew of John Carter, it is called emergency in New York and on his arrival, he learns that John Carter was found dead in the morning. In his will, John Carter asks to be buried in a mausoleum opening only fro

m the inside. He left behind a manuscript that will form the heart of the story. In it, John Carter tells what happened to him years ago when he was looking for gold in Arizona with a partner. Attacked by Apaches, his friend is killed and he finds refuge in a mysterious cave where he was seized with

a sudden numbness. While the Apaches are visibly terrified by what there is in the cave, John Carter is literally torn from his body and finds himself split, standing naked beside his own body. Then attracted by Mars shining in the sky, the planet that has always fascinated, he reaches out to her a

nd feels transported through the void. John Carter wakes up naked on the floor of the red planet where he soon discovers that he is able to make huge leaps because of the low gravity, allowing it to escape a band of green Martians who attack to protect the enclosure where their young are. This physi

cal feat is to be captured rather than killed him. Green Martians who captured are creatures of more than four meters, with two legs, two arms and two intermediate members can serve as legs or hands. They live in herds that occupy old abandoned cities, apparently built by human beings size living ra

pine and are continually at war. They are cruel and brutal beings rapidly conceive of respect for John Carter, especially when one of them kills with a single punch, thus taking the property and the title of the death. Both prisoner and leader John Carter is guarded by the Martian equivalent of a do

g, Woola, a cap which he went quickly master in saving his life while he earns the respect of Tars Tarkas, a noble Thark (the tribe of green Martians where he lives), which seems less brutal than other green Martians. Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 - March 19, 1950) was an American writer

, best known for his creations of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres. Early life Burroughs was born on September 1, 1875, in Chicago, Illinois (he later lived for many years in the suburb of Oak Park), the fourth son of busine

ssman and Civil War veteran Major George Tyler Burroughs (1833-1913) and his wife Mary Evaline (Zieger) Burroughs (1840-1920). His middle name is from his paternal grandmother, Mary Rice Burroughs (1802-ca.1870). Burroughs was educated at a number of local schools, and during the Chicago influenza e

pidemic in 1891, he spent a half year at his brother’s ranch on the Raft River in Idaho. He then attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and then the Michigan Military Academy. Graduating in 1895, and failing the entrance exam for the United States Military Academy (West Point), he

ended up as an enlisted soldier with the 7th U.S. Cavalry in Fort Grant, Arizona Territory. After being diagnosed with a heart problem and thus ineligible to serve, he was discharged in 1897.
